Dr. Ruf is a native of Lousiville, Ky., where he earned a B.A. degree from Bellarmine College in 1965. After receiving an M.D. degree from the University of Kentucky College of Medicine in 1969, he spent two years in General Surgery residency at Emory University before being called in 1971 to serve overseas in the U.S. Navy for three years.

Upon returning home he trained in General Surgery for two more years at the University of Kansas before moving to Charleston, South Carolina where he completed his Plastic Surgery residency. After a one year fellowship in Cosmetic Surgery and Hand Surgery at Albany University Medical Center in New York, Dr. Ruf and Dr. DeLoach founded Savannah Plastic Surgery in August of 1980.

In 1981 Dr. Ruf achieved certification by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and since then has pursued an aggressive schedule of professional meetings and courses to maintain, as well as advance his knowledge and skills. He has spoken on a broad range of topics in Plastic Surgery at local, regional, and national meetings. He has undergone cosmetic surgery himself, and to preserve the results, he utilizes the techniques and products from The Skin Institute at Savannah Plastic Surgery. Teaching residents in Surgery at Memorial Health University has been an ongoing part of Dr. Ruf's professional activities. He holds a teaching appointment to the Mercer University Department of Surgery as Clinical Assistant Professor. Special professional interests and expertise include cosmetic procedures of the face and breasts, body contouring (including lifts and liposuction), laser work, hair transplantation, birth deformities (especially cleft lip and prominent ears), and finally hand surgery.
